The High Court Ruling

The High Court has ruled that there must be a vote in Parliament before Article 50 is triggered. May can probably get a majority in the Commons, but the Lords is a different matter. The possible outcome of this are:

1) the use of the Parliament Act to over ride the Lords – with a reform or abolition of the Lords to follow. But the Lords blocking Brexit would – even with the Parliament Act – delay everything for a year;

2) May could call a general election – and she would win it. But the Fixed Term Parliament Act makes that much harder than previously. But if she could get a dissolution, she could fight the election on a variant of Lloyd George’s 1910 ‘Classes against the masses’ election.

3) the Government will appeal to the Supreme Court, where the judgement might be overturned.
